Bishop Richard Curtis: A Life in Music Ministry
Bishop Richard Curtis’s foundation in music and organ playing was laid early in life by his mother, the late Reverend Rosa Mae Curtis—the founding Pastor of Gospel Mission. A powerhouse of talent and faith, she was an entrepreneur, gospel singer, recording artist, pianist, songwriter, and above all, a devoted servant of God.

One of the most pivotal moments in Bishop Curtis’s life came at age twelve. When he asked for a ten-speed bicycle for Christmas, his mother made a deal: he could have the bike—if he learned a song on the piano and played it in church by Christmas. Richard eagerly rose to the challenge, learned the song quickly, and had his bike by Thanksgiving. That single act sparked a lifelong journey in music and ministry.

Through playing the piano and organ at church, Bishop Curtis discovered the deeper light of the Lord. It marked the beginning of his music ministry and a powerful turning point in his life. As a teenager, he went on to form his own choir, serving as musical director, songwriter, and arranger.

Music has continued to be a central blessing in his life. He and his wife Beverly share a home filled with worship, harmony, and talent. Beverly is a gifted singer, and together their children are all accomplished vocalists and musicians. The family’s gospel group, The Richard Curtis Singers, has recorded numerous songs and is preparing for a new project.
The musical legacy continues with their grandchildren, affectionately known as The Grand Band. Under Bishop Curtis’s guidance, they have become an essential part of Gospel Mission’s music ministry—ensuring that the gift of music and the message of God carry on through generations.
