Elder George Heyward, Jr.

Elder George Heyward

George Heyward, Jr. was born in Beaufort, South Carolina.  George is the eldest of nine children and has lived in New York since September 1969.

George started playing guitar in 1957 at the age of ten. It was his dream to play his guitar well enough that any song he played could be easily recognized. George achieved that dream and has played for many churches in the south and NY tri-state region.  He’s undoubtably known for his unique renditions of songs like When the Saints Go Marching In, Don’t Let the Devil Ride, Blessed Quietness, If It Had Not Been for the Lord on My Side, Where Would I Be? and Because He Lives, to name a few.  George was married to the late Barbara Heyward who was not only instrumental in his personal life but also joined him in his ministry accompanying him on the wash board as he played.

They were a dynamic Gospel duo inseparable till her transition in 2018.  George continues to keep that ministry alive and blesses all hearts with his anointed guitar playing and spoken word ministry.  He is the living example of Psalm 150– “Praise Him on the string Instrument!”
